Group Discussion Question 2: What are some ways in which the Gospel might be made to dwell more richly among us? In short, whenever God threatens, he shews, as it were, indirectly the punishment, that, beholding it in the reprobate, we may be deterred from sinning. The virtues of verse 12 and the forbearance and forgiveness of verse 13 come about because of what the Lord has done.

It is also to be noticed, that the old man is distinguished by his works, as a tree is by its fruits. But it is even better… Because Christ was raised from the dead – we too share in the same life that He has – we are in union with His life and our life is now and forever hidden in Christ. At this point in verse 12, Paul simply begins describing attributes that are to be fruit of the gospel in our lives as believers.

For as all the things that he has hitherto enumerated flow from love, he now on good grounds exhorts the Colossians to cherish love among themselves, for the sake of these things — that they may be merciful, gentle, ready to forgive, as though he had said, that they would be such only in the event of their having love.

The verses of our lesson begin with the word “therefore” in Greek–though this is often translated “then” and placed somehow as something other than the first word of the sentence.

Read Colossians 3:12-17. There remains nothing, therefore, but the righteousness of faith, because perfect love is nowhere to be found. 3 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

For we are, saved by hope. The significance of this is great. The “therefore,” however, reaches back to the material in 3:1-4 and recognizes that whatever actions the Christians take are taken because of what God has done — that is, Christian life is the consequence of the gospel. As he had already begun to discourse in reference to different parts of the Christian life, and had simply touched upon a few precepts, it would have been too tedious a thing to follow out the rest one by one, he therefore concludes in a summary way, that life must be regulated in such a manner, that whatever we say or do may be wholly governed by the authority of Christ, and may have an eye to his glory as the mark. “Then, ” says he, “will it appear that ye are renewed by Christ, when ye are merciful and kind. Why does he now teach, that the things which are on earth are to be left off? 17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

I attended a denominational meeting a few years back at which the person facilitating a discussion time asked the following question to a group of pastors: "What would you tell someone who approached you asking how to become saved?"

Verse 15 seems to speak of the results of following the directives to love and to forgive — that is, the Colossians are both to let the peace of Christ reign in their hearts and to be thankful to God for the peace and forgiveness that they experience.

Hence he says, in our hearts; because we constantly feel there great conflicts, while the flesh lusteth against the Spirit.

He adds, in one body, meaning by this, that we cannot be in a state of agreement with God otherwise than by being united among ourselves as members of one body. Verse 14 itself is the admonition to put on love, which seems to supersede and epitomize the other virtues and directions given in this passage.
